The screen adaptation of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven is set to premiere in a couple of weeks, and HBO Max released a trailer today that’s slightly less pandemic-focused than the show’s first teaser.
Station Eleven jumps back and forth twenty years before and after a flu wipes out most of civilization. It’s a story about a group of connected characters making their way through this drastically changed world, and is more hopeful than your usual post-apocalyptical tale. The first teaser didn’t really focus on that and instead emphasized the, “Oh no! There’s a pandemic!” aspect, something we’re all a little too familiar with.
This trailer, however, does a better job establishing what the limited series is presumably about—the journey and experiences of a cast of characters including Mackenzie Davis as Kirsten, Gael Garcia Bernal as Arthur Leander, Himesh Patel as Jeevan and Danielle Deadwyler as Miranda. We’re also introduced to the Prophet (David Wilmot), a man who starts a cult at an old airport (aka “the museum of civilization”) and gets entangled with the other characters.
The trailer is hopeful, and also gives me additional hope that showrunner Patrick Somerville (Maniac) has created an adaptation that captures the heart of Mandel’s novel.
Station Eleven premieres on HBO Max on December 16, 2021.
